First Half Goals Betting Meaning
First half goals betting counts only the goals scored before the interval. The common lines are first half over 0.5 (at least one goal by half time) and first half over 1.5 (at least two), settling on the 45-minute score plus first-half stoppage. Whatever happens after the break is irrelevant.
How it settles
The half-time scoreboard decides everything, own goals included. The half-goal lines cannot push; whole-line variants (first half under 1.0) refund on exactly one goal. The maths
First half over 0.5 lands in roughly seven matches in ten, pricing around 1.25 to 1.45. Over 1.5 before the break is a genuinely demanding ask — most first halves finish 0-0 or with a single goal — and prices run from 2.2 to 3.2 accordingly. At 2.60 the implied probability is 38.5 percent, so the bet needs fixtures where early goals are a pattern, not a hope.
The signal that matters is scoring profile, not just scoring volume. Some teams are front-loaded — high pressers who score early and manage games late; others are second-half sides by fitness or by design. Averaging the two profiles into a match total misses exactly what this market prices, which is why our model builds first-half expectancies separately rather than taking a fraction of the full-match number.
A worked example
Two attacking sides whose matches consistently produce early action: model first-half expectancy 1.6 combined, over 1.5 first-half goals priced 2.75 (implying 36.4) against a model figure of 41 percent. £10 returns £27.50 when the half ends 2-0. The same bet loses when the match finishes 3-2 with a goalless first half — right fixture, wrong clock, and the reason this line rewards profile research over highlight reels.
