Bet builders: correlation is the whole game

A bet builder stacks several selections from one match into a single price: a team to win, both teams to score, a player to find the net, over so many cards. Bookmakers promote builders harder than almost anything else they sell, and the reason is arithmetic. Each added leg carries margin, and because the legs come from one fixture, the operator prices their interaction with a healthy buffer in its own favour. A carelessly built four-leg builder is routinely priced ten to twenty percent worse than fair.

The word that decides whether a builder is clever or expensive is correlation. Legs that rise and fall together, a favourite winning plus their striker scoring plus over 1.5 goals, describe one coherent story: the favourite performs. The combined fair probability of a coherent story is much higher than multiplying the legs as if they were independent, and the question is whether the bookmaker's price respects that. Sometimes it does not, and a correlated builder becomes one of the few genuinely underpriced products on the site of a major operator. Contradictory legs, a low-scoring match plus a striker to score twice, do the reverse and are almost always poor value.

The model's role here is exactly that correlation check. Because every market we price comes off one scoreline grid per fixture, the model can price a combination properly: the probability of the win and the goals and the scorer together, inside consistent match outcomes, rather than three independent numbers multiplied naively. Builder angles published on this page are combinations whose modelled joint probability beats the offered price, and the settled record tracks them like every other market.

Practical guidance: two or three legs telling one story usually beats five legs telling several; player legs add the most variance because team news arrives late; and the advertised "boost" on pre-packaged builders is usually a discount on an inflated price rather than a gift.
